IOS18: Apple sets the tone for email in 2025

In recent years, the latest email provider updates have been closely followed. Their impact on email strategies can be significant enough to give professionals cold sweats.

Apple’s latest update, IOS18 was no exception.

Here are, in a nutshell, the 3 main new features for email:

  • The introduction of tabs in Apple Mail
  • Grouping messages by sender
  • AI with Apple Intelligence

1. Apple adds tabs to Apple Mail

Al igual que Gmail, Apple propondrá una categorización de emails según varios criterios.

Just like Gmail, Apple is going to offer email categorization based on several criteria.

Here are the 4 tab categories:

  • Main:
    This tab will group the most anticipated and important emails.
    Recipients will find emails from well-known people and important communications here.
  • Transactions:
    This will gather purchase confirmations and invoices.
  • Updates:
    This is where Apple sends social network notifications and newsletters.
  • Promotions:
    Finally, marketing and sales messages will be filed in this tab.

 

Apple differs in that newsletters are classified under “Updates” rather than “Promotions”.

Emails will therefore be separated into two categories, with one dedicated to more sales-oriented campaigns.

2. Apple groups messagesby sender

Apple has created a view that makes it quicker and easier to find messages from the same company.

This will enable recipients to find all information from the same brand in one place.

This view will also offer email snippets to quickly visualize if there are any new messages to note, or the information you’re looking for.

Note that you will always have the option of changing the entity category afterwards.

3. Apple announces the launch of its Artificial Intelligence

Apple Intelligence: the new AI 

 Apple Intelligence will enable email summaries and automatic replies. 

Automatic pre-headers in inboxes

The biggest change is in the pre-header. Apple will offer a summary of the email received below the subject line. 

The aim is to give users quicker access to what they’re looking for, and to offer them a clearer, more readable inbox, geared to their expectations.

Defined priority emails

Another major change is that AI places priority emails at the top of your inbox.

Similarly, notifications in general (SMS, email, etc.) will be highlighted if they are deemed a priority. They will also be provided with a summary.

About data protection

In terms of personal data protection required by Artificial Intelligence, Apple’s policy is to be aware of personal data without collecting it.
AI would therefore be used solely for the user experience.

September 2024 update

Appel has specified that some new features will be available in September, and others by the end of 2024.
The changeover is set to take place gradually.

In a few weeks’ time, Apple will also make its sandbox available to developers for testing IOS 18. This will give us a clearer picture of the changes. The Mindbaz team will be on the front line to test and give you detailed feedback.
